Ilhan Omar becomes one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress

The Sun Nigeria / Omotayo Edubi /

Vox

Minnesota state Rep. Ilhan Omar has become one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress, easily winning the election in Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District  the Minneapolis-area district previously represented by Keith Ellison on Tuesday.

Omar, a 36-year-old Somali refugee who immigrated to the United States as a teenager, beat Republican Jennifer Zielinski to take Ellison’s seat, which he vacated to run for Minnesota attorney general.

The district, covering Minneapolis and some surrounding suburbs, is deep blue, so Omar was expected to be elected to the House in November. The voters elected Ellison for six terms before he sought the attorney general’s office.

The makeup of the district has allowed progressive politics to flourish. Omar ran on a platform that embraced the left, including Medicare-for-all, a $15 minimum wage, and tuition-free college.

Omar said President Trump’s “politics of fear” motivated her to get in the race.

“It is a district that is very much interested in making sure our progressive values are represented, and they know the only way they’ll continue to be represented is if we have people who are not going to just think about getting themselves to Washington, but think about getting other progressives to Washington,” she said in an interview with MinnPost.

Omar is one of two candidates likely to become the first Muslim women elected to Congress this fall: The other is Michigan’s Rashida Tlaib. Tlaib is expected to replace disgraced Rep. John Conyers, who resigned after sexual misconduct allegations, in another safe Democratic district. Congress currently has only two lawmakers who identify as Muslim — and both of them, including Ellison, are men.

Omar, the first Somali-American Muslim to be elected to the Minnesota legislature or any elected office in the United States, is also part of a historic wave of women looking to clinch higher office this year. Women and people of color are still underrepresented in Congress (20 percent women and 19 percent people of color), but 146 women have won Democratic primaries in 2018.

Omar faced Islamophobic attacks during her campaign from outside conservative media outlets, who have baselessly claimed she was once married to her brother and has ties to terrorists. Laura Loomer — a far-right provocateur and “guerilla journalist” with a history of anti-Muslim rants who says she is investigating Muslim candidates — also crashed a joint campaign event with Tlaib and Omar, yelling questions about Hamas and female genital mutilation.

Those attacks didn’t have any sway in the general election, though.

BSU VC slams ‘incessant’ ASUU strikes

The Sun Nigeria / Segun Adio /

Rose Ejembi, Makurdi

Vice Chancellor, Benue State University (BSU), Prof. Msugh Kembe, had lamented that the ‘incessant’ strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was crippling university education in the country.

The vice chancellor stated this, on Tuesday, when he relayed host to the state executive council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) led by its acting chairman, Mr. Kajo Martins. He regretted that the incessant industrial action was already affecting academic calendar of universities.

“Let me emphasis here that due to ongoing strike by ASUU, we have asked our students to go back home and this will surely truncate academic calendar of the university.”

Kembe who posited that one of the requirements for assessing standards in universities is the presence of foreign students in the country universities lamented that private universities were enjoying the patronage of foreign students than public universities.

“The random strike is causing a lot of disservice to Nigerian Universities because in one of the requirements of assessing the standard of the university is the presence of foreign students.

“For instance, when a student is coming from Ghana to study in Nigeria, let us say for two years course, he is expected to to spend the two years and go away but this is no longer the case, this is causing disservice to the universities, particularly, the public universities.

He explained further that the suspension of prospective graduates from the university by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) had been lifted and graduates from the university had already been mobilized to participate in the next batch of the scheme commencing in a few days time.

EFCC removes name of Billionaire bizman from Wanted Persons List

The Sun Nigeria / Segun Adio /

Godwin Tsa, Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has complied with the judgment of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) directing it to  remove the name of a billionaire businessman and Founder of AITEO Group, Mr. Benedict Peters from its wanted list.

Although there was no official confirmation from the EFCC, a top lawyer who participated in the case confided with Daily Sun that his client’s name had been de-listed from the wanted list of the Commission.

The Agency had, prior to the court action, published the name of the business mogul on its official website among the list of Wanted Persons.

However, delivering judgment in the suit filed by Peters against the anti- graft agency over the issue, Justice  Othman Musa, sitting in Bwari division of the Court ordered the anti corruption agency to immediately remove his  name from their wanted persons list published on the Commission website.

The Commission had ‎on August 15,  2016, the EFCC declared Mr.Benedict Peters wanted in connection with an ongoing  investigation without first following all the laid down procedures which led Peters to approach the High Court to seek redress for the injustice done to him .

In his judgment delivered on the 22nd of March 22, 2018, Justice Musa agreed that the EFCC had powers to declare somebody wanted but that it must be done in strict compliance with the rule of law and order of the court and since the action was done in violation of the provisions of the law thereby hurting and infringing on the rights of Mr. Benedict peters, the judge declared the declaration of Peters as a wanted person/the uploading of his data on the website of the EFCC as unconstitutional and void.

The judge ordered EFCC to remove the name of the businessman from their website where wanted persons list are uploaded immediately.

Already the development has attracted reactions from individuals and civil society groups who applauded President Muhammadu Buhari, Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN) and the EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Magu for towig on the path of the law.

Before the judgment, the Commission had in a statement signed by its spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said that Peters was wanted for criminal conspiracy, diversion of funds and money laundering.

The statement read in part, “Dark-complexioned Peters is wanted in connection with a case of criminal conspiracy , diversion of funds and money laundering. He hails from Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. His last known address is 8B Agodogba Avenue, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos.”

Mr. Peters allegedly played a role in the $115 million (N23 billion) bribe led by former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, during the build-up to the 2015 election.

Some of the money, according to an EFCC official, was said to have originated from some oil companies.

The official disclosed that Northern Belt Gas Company Limited allegedly gave $60m to Fidelity Bank on behalf of Diezani.

The EFCC official said,“We have launched investigations into the companies that gave Diezani money in form of kickbacks. About $60m came from Northern Belt Gas Company Limited. We have not been able to ascertain the directors of the company. However, we found out that Mr. Benedict Peters is the sole signatory to the account at Fidelity Bank.

“All attempts to get him have proved abortive. We currently do not know where he is and he is hardly ever in one place because he has a private jet.”

Buhari endorses N30, 000 minimum wage

The Sun Nigeria / Segun Adio /

…Why we recommended N30,000 – Pepple

Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja

President Muhammadu Buhari has endorsed N30,000 minimum wage recommendation by Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage.

President Buhari while responding said he was committed to having a new national minimum wage within the shortest time.

He said the necessary machinery will put in place to transmit an executive bill to the National Assembly on the new national minimum wage.

He told labour assured the workers that as the Executive Arm commences its review of the submission, “we will continue to engage you all in closing any open areas presented in this report. I therefore would like to ask for your patience and understanding in the coming weeks.”

President Buhari urged workers not to allow themselves to be used as what he tagged, as “political weapons.”

The President said that in the last three years, his administration has focused on correcting this deficiency.

President Buhari said, “We are working to create a diversified and inclusive economy.

“We are pushing to clear pension arrears owed to our retired workers with the limited resources available to us.

“We supported State Governments to pay workers salary. And of course, we set up a committee in order to review the minimum wage of workers.

“In constituting this committee, we took into account the need for all stakeholders to be adequately represented – the government, the private sector and most importantly the workers. Our goal was to get an outcome that was consensual.

“From the onset, we knew the committee had a difficult task ahead of it. But at the same time, we were also confident that the patriotic and professional background of its members would produce realistic, fair and implementable recommendations that will be considered by both the executive and legislative arms of government.

“I am not surprised that the committee has worked for close to one year. I am also not surprised that on a few occasions, the debates got heated and sometimes, these differences came out.

“What is truly inspiring is that, in almost all instances of disagreements, the committee members always came back to the negotiating table with a common goal of improving the welfare of Nigerian workers.

“On behalf of all Nigerians today, I want to thank you for your commitment and sacrifice in getting us to where we are today.

“In the past few days, I have been receiving regular updates on your deliberations. And today, I am pleased that you have completed your work in a peaceful and non-confrontational manner. The entire nation is grateful to you all.

“The Committee Chairman highlighted some of the challenges encountered during your deliberations, especially as it relates to having a consensus position acceptable by all parties.

“I understand, on the government side, the concerns raised were around affordability – that today many states struggle to meet their existing salary requirements.

“On the side of labour, the points raised focused on the need for any increase to be meaningful.

“In a way, both arguments are valid. I want to assure you all that we will immediately put in place the necessary machinery that will close out these open areas. Our plan is to transmit the Executive Bill to the National Assembly for passage within the shortest possible time.

“I am fully committed to having a new National Minimum Wage Act in the very near future.

“Let me use this opportunity to recognise the leadership of the organised labour and private sector as well as representatives of State and Federal Governments for all your hard work. The fact that we are here today, is a notable achievement.”

The chairperson of the Tripartite Committee, Amal Pepple, had earlier said the committee recommended N30,000.

READ ALSO: Malaria: US distributes 3.3m insecticide-treated bed nets

She also said the committee also provided a draft bill to be sent to the National Assembly for confirmation.

Submitting the report, Pepple said, “To arrive at our recommendation, the committee carefully weighed the demand of the Nigerian workers which was predicated on the high cost of living occasioned by unfavourable exchange rate and rising inflation over the past few years, among other factors. The committee also considered the overall macro-economic indicators, including the revenue and expenditure profile of government as provided by the honorable ministers of Budget and National Planning and Finance as well as the Minimim Wage proposed by some state governments in their memoranda submitted to the committee.

“Consideration was also given to the critical role of the informal sector in employment generation and the need for a realistic minimum wage that will not stifle the growth of the sector and the overall economy.

“After carefully weighing these critical factors and bearing in the mind the overriding interest of the economy the Committee while noting the offer of N24,000 by the federal government, is recommending an increase in the existing minimum wage from N18,000 to N30,000. We believe that the implementation of the recommended minimum wage, will, no doubt, boost the purchasing power of workers, increase consumption expenditure and ultimately stimulate business and overall economic growth.”

She added, “The committee has also produced a draft national minimum wage bill 2018 for condition by government. We strongly believe that the enactment of the draft bill into law is very critical to the operation and future reviews of the National Minimum Wage.

Lagos 2019: We fear we’ll lose to rigging, vote buying – AD candidate

The Sun Nigeria / Segun Adio /

Farida Magaji

The governorship candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), in Lagos State, Owolabi Salis, has said his campaign is worried that it may lose the election to rigging and vote buying.

While speaking yesterday at a Seminar organised by the Christian Ministries Welfare Initiative (CMWI), in Lagos, the governorship candidate said he is confident of winning if the election would be devoid of rigging and vote buying.

“We have been looking at our disadvantages in this election and we know we are going to win, but we know our weaknesses.  One of them is vote buying and another one is election rigging. “However, we are talking to the people over the issue of vote buying and are sensitising them on the need to protect their votes and not sell them.

“We are doing underground campaigns because we are beginning to see the spiritual importance of the AD.  We are taking Lagos State, and we are winning,” Salis said.

On the issue of the ongoing negotiation between the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Federal Government over minimum wage increment, he said: “ If I were to be part of the labour union, one of the arguments  I would put forward is that several years ago, when they approved N18, 000 as minimum wage, the  exchange rate was N260 per one dollar, that means the minimum wage was $300 dollars then, so they were too slow, asking for review when the dollar was going up.

“The Nigerian economy is being shaped by the exchange rate, and demand and supply and the economy is presently in bad shape. Labour is just asking for wage without putting statistics down.

“The money is there, the government is getting more money. So where is the money to pay?

“When I become governor, I will focus on reducing the rate of poverty. The government taxes the rich, to support the poor but that gap has to be bridged.

“In Amercia for instance, Medicare is there for the poor people. If you are a rich man, you have to pay for your health services, and if you can’t pay, you buy insurance. Such can be applicable here.

“In housing, they have a lot of houses for poor people, it is even better than what some rich men have.

“So, the house are given to poor people to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor and it works, I have done an extensive  research on it and I plan to bring it home to Lagos.”

2019: coalition says some politicians plan to distabilise the country’s peace

The Sun Nigeria / Ajiri Daniels /

NAN

A coalition of 24 Civil Society Organisations (C24), says some desperate politicians are planning to distabilise the country`s peace, before, during and after the 2019 general elections.

Mr Dennis Aghanya, the Executive Secretary, Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiative (ARDI) raised the alarm on behalf of the coalition at a news conference on Monday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the objective of C24 is to ensure good governance and electoral integrity in Nigeria.

According to him, the coalition is raising the alarm based on its investigations, and wants such politicians to retract their steps because Nigerians are watching.

He added that the plan of the politicians to disrupt the county’s peace would not be unconnected to the fact that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration had prosecuted many highly influential members of the political class for looting public treasury when they held public office.

READ ALSO: Gov. Shettima swears in 21 commissioners

Some of these politicians he noted had been forced to pay back huge sums of money stolen from the Federal Government through shady companies and business practices.

He said that such politicians were prepared to wreak anything, even the country itself to prevent the inevitable reckoning, saying that they had responded with curious political realignments to strengthen their conspiracy.

“These rattled members of the political class consider themselves in a race against time to ward off the evil day when they must account for their misdeeds against the people.

“May we by this briefing, put them on notice that all is known, and we will not hesitate to mention names should they fail to drop their ungodly activities.

“Let it be known that we will keep watch over our homeland to make sure that its peace and development is not frustrated by anti- democratic and corrupt elements,’’ Aghanya  said.

He recalled that the Buhari administration had also undertook a cleansing of the judiciary earlier in the year, raiding residences and making arrest of some highly placed judicial officers in the country.

READ ALSO: Gov. Shettima swears in 21 commissioners

This, he alleged could be the reason some members of the judiciary had been compromised by the political class ahead of the 2019 general election.

He also alleged that some members of the Judiciary had become hub of a grand conspiracy to undermine the county`s electoral sovereignty via incendiary rulings, injunctions and judgments throughout the 2019 electoral cycle to provoke civil uprising among the populace.

Aghanya, however, said it was necessary for officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to leave above board and to uphold the credibility of the commission ahead of the elections.

Investigative journalism key to uncovering corruption in Nigeria –SERAP

The Sun Nigeria / Ajiri Daniels /

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has launched its latest publication titled: Uncovering corruption in Nigeria: A manual for investigative journalists.
The manual, which  was  was presented by journalist and human rights activist Richard Akinnola, in Lagos, at an interactive session for investigative journalists from across Nigeria which held at the CITIHEIGHT Hotel, Lagos.
“The public has a right of access to information which is a public concern and of which the public ought to know.
“Newspapers, television and radio stations are the agent, so to speak, of the public to collect the information and to tell the public of it. In support of the right of access, they should not in general be compelled to disclose their source of information.
“Neither by means of discovery by trial nor by questions or cross-examination at the trial nor by subpoena,” said Akinnola.
The manual, published with the support of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), reads in part: “Painstaking research and patience are the dual hallmarks of an investigative journalist. Fortunately, google is everybody’s friend. You need to check and double check whatever your sources are giving you.
Anyone who walks to you to give you documents incriminating someone has a purpose or agenda, and it may not be altruistic.
“He may want to even scores with someone and, in that process, may procure fake and questionable documents that might appear real and, if you don’t double-check and are not meticulous, you may be court in the wen of a libel action after publication. The honeypot of any investigative journalist is his/her sources…
“A source must be able to trust you, hence the issue of confidentiality of what your source gives or tells you.”

Osinbajo tasks Canadian investors on opportunities in Nigeria

The Sun Nigeria / Ajiri Daniels /

NAN

Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has urged Canadian investors to explore the opportunities that abound in Nigeria’s education, health and transport sectors.

Osinbajo made the call while declaring open the Nigeria-Canada Investment Summit 2018 on Monday in Abuja.

The theme of the 2-day summit is “Fostering Strong Business Partnership into the Future.’’

He said that already Canadian investors were familiar with opportunities in the power generation, renewable energy, development of gas to power, mining of solid minerals, agriculture and food processing, manufacturing and real estate sectors.

Osinbajo said that Nigeria and Canada had a long history of friendly relations as Commonwealth countries, as Federations, as well as a shared commitment to promoting global peace.

According to the vice president, the summit further confirms the mutual desire for deeper engagement not just between both governments but also business communities in both countries.

He said Nigeria was Canada’s largest trading partner in Sub-Saharan Africa, adding that there were opportunities and scope for increased trade and investment ties between the two countries.

“Our medium-term economic plan, documented in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) identified some of the sectors that many Canadian investors are already very familiar with as priority sectors.

“Power generation, renewable energy, development of gas to power, mining of solid minerals, agriculture and food processing, manufacturing and real estate.

“However, opportunities also abound in social infrastructure (education and healthcare) as well as physical infrastructure (air, land and sea transport).

“While we formulate the policies in government, we expect the private sector to make the necessary investments and encourage Nigerians and foreign investors to work with us towards the realisation of these opportunities.’’

Osinbajo said that to accelerate the mobilisation of private capital towards the achievement of the ERGP, the Federal Government conducted ‘Focus Labs’ over a period of 17 weeks in the first half of 2018.

He said that the Focus Labs were special interventions targeted at resolving specific bureaucratic bottlenecks facing large-scale investments in Nigeria.

The vice president said that in the labs, investors sat with relevant Ministers, regulators and government agencies to resolve the investor’s specific problems.

“The Focus Labs identified 22.5 billion dollars worth of private investments in six of our priority sectors, with the potential to create half a million jobs by 2020.

“10.9 billion dollars of these investments are -most ready to go- meaning that the issues delaying them can be resolved – and are being resolved – speedily. We intend to continue the use of focus labs to resolve problems investors may have.

“I also encourage Canadian investors interested in any of these sectors to reach out to the team at Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) who are here for the summit for additional information.

“Given Canada’s strengths in these areas and the potentials of the Nigerian economy, I am certain that this Summit will lead to positive outcomes for all participants.’’

He said that all of the efforts he outlined, around Ease of Doing Business and the resolution of bureaucratic issues could be summed up as `soft infrastructure.’

According to him, the Federal Government was making aggressive interventions in the ‘hard infrastructure’ elements as well as roads, rail and power.

He added that government fully understood the very vital catalytic role that these would play for private investment.

Earlier in his remark, Mr Ryan Ward, Deputy High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, said that the forum was crucial going by the significant economic ties between Nigeria and Canada.

He said that Nigeria was Canada’s biggest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa as well as the largest investor into Canada from the region.

He said aside economic ties; there was an ever increasing personal ties between the two countries.

“From over 70,000 Canadians of Nigerian descent to over 11,000 Nigerian students in Canadian schools.

“We are here to talk about how to bring more Canadian investors and business to Nigeria.

“If you look at sectors of growth in Nigeria, they are in line with Canadian expertise whether in infrastructure, telecommunication, natural resources extraction, aviation or technology,’’ he said.

Twenty-six candidates of the House of Assembly of  the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Ogun State, have called on the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, to respect the outcome of the legislative primaries and submit their names to the National Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).

The candidates, who declared that  they were respectively announced as winners by Col. Briefing newsmen on Monday at the NUJ Press Center, Abeokuta on behalf of the candidates, Segun Idowu from Remo North State Constituency, said they were alarmed when Oshiomhole announced on a national television network on Friday that the party had submitted names of candidates to INEC.

Idowu, explained further that the candidates intensified enquiries at the State Secretariat of the party, only to learn from the state party chairman, Derin Adebiyi, on Saturday, November 3, that the National Director of Organization if APC was requesting names of the candidates, 24 hours after the expiration of the deadline.

“The primary elections took place in all the 236 wards of Ogun State. The peaceful and transparent elections were televised live on national television platforms of the Nigeria Television Authority, Channels Television, among others.  At the completion of the exercise, the results of the elections were accordingly announced by the chairman.

NAN

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Enugu State has commenced display of voters’ register in all the 260 wards of the state.

Mr. Emeka Ononamadu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Enugu State said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.

“As of today, we are already pasting the voters register for display beginning from tomorrow (Nov. 6) in line with the Election Project Plan (EPP).

“The exercise will be done on ward-to-ward basis across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state,’’ he said.

“The printing of the last tranche of the permanent Voters Card (PVC) will soon be completed so it can be available to the electorates before the election.

“These and many I have mentioned just to show that the commission is beating deadlines and in trying to beat deadlines, it is not defaulting in any of the electoral plans based on the EPP,’’ he said.

Ononamadu disclosed that the commission had embarked on Voters Education and Publicity (VEP) using the mediums of radio, newspapers, Television, churches and mosques.

He added that the one day meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) held in Enugu was also part of Voter Education for the electorates.

On the issue of uncollected PVC’s, Ononamadu said the commission was beginning to overcome such through the effort of major stakeholders.

“Enugu State today is part of the states with the lowest number of uncollected PVC,s and I must commend the relevant stakeholders for ensuring that we achieve this feat.

“For three weeks now, our officers have been going from ward to ward in all the 17 Local Government Areas of the state to distribute the PVCs.

“People also go to our offices in all the local government areas everyday to collect their PVCs because I am aware of this and it is encouraging.

“However, the names of those whose cards are available but are yet to collect them have been printed and would be posted in communities and other strategic points.

“The essence is for friends, relatives and other well meaning individuals who come across such list to help notify the affected persons through word-of-mouth communication,” Ononamadu noted.

The INEC REC also said sensitization of its Ad-Hoc staff especially corps members to prepare their minds before the proper training had started.

He however, said the date of the training for its Ad-Hoc staff in the state would be announced soon.

Ononamadu said the commission was aware of its numerous challenges especially at the state level and it was working to surmount them and deliver on its mandate of conducting credible and fair elections.

“Also, the commission is not unaware of the new twist that election in Nigeria is beginning to take and the dynamics that played out during the recently conducted elections and party primaries.

“We are working hard to block such loopholes and make sure the coming election is very transparent and devoid of any electoral manipulation.’’

The INEC Commissioner, therefore, warned that any information not coming directly from INEC or its reliable channels and platforms should be disregarded.

The REC noted that certain individuals might want to take advantage of the electioneering period to pass wrong information and make people fall victim.
